MAYFIELD, N.Y. - A Fulton County church caught fire Thursday morning due to lightning storms.
The fire started around 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning at the Mayfield Central Presbyterian Church, a 19th century church located at 22 N. Main Street. When firefighters arrived, the steeple of the church was in flames.
Lightning struck the church at the time that powerful thunderstorms hit the Capital Region, and throughout New York Thursday.
No one was injured during the fire. Several fire companies reported to the scene.
The blaze was put out by 10 a.m. and demolition crews had removed the wood-frame steeple and tower by late morning. There were no injuries.
The church is home to a small congregation and includes a food pantry that serves families in the local community.
Another church fire took place in Columbia County Thursday morning at the Stuyvesant Reform Church, which was safely put out by firefighters from the Stuyvesant Fire Station.
