St. JOHNSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a man has died after being thrown from his snowmobile into the path of an oncoming pickup truck in upstate New York.
The Montgomery County Sheriff's department says 50-year-old James Haak was riding at about 1 a.m. Sunday on a local road in his hometown of St. Johnsville when he lost control, hit a guard rail and was hit by the pickup.
The Gloversville Leader-Herald reports another snowmobiler tried unsuccessfully to wave off the truck driver to avoid the unconscious Haak, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver
was not ticketed.
Undersheriff Jeffrey Smith tells the newspaper speed and alcohol may have been factors in Haak's crash and the other man sledding with him was ticketed for snowmobiling while intoxicated.
St. Johnsville is about 50 miles west of Albany.
