Southbound Lane Open After Fatal Thruway Accident

SAUGERTIES, N.Y. -- A deadly accident caused some major backups on the Thruway Monday morning.

It happened between Exits 20 (Saugerties) and 21 (Catskill) around 4:00am, closing down both sides of the Thruway for several hours.

Police say a truck hauling hay was going south when it hit a car, went into the median and burst into flames.

The truck driver died, but no one else was hurt.

The northbound lanes reopened at about 8 a.m. and the left lane southbound was cleared just before noon. Officials say there are still delays.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
