The former Senate Majority Leader had been staring at prison after being convicted on two counts under the so-called "honest services" statute of federal law. But the Supremes ruled that the "honest services" statute applies only to bribery and kickbacks and not, as in Bruno's case, to hidden conflicts of interest.More >>

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The U.S. attorneys who prosecuted the corruption case against former Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno have broken their silence.
On Friday, a panel including a U.S. attorney and two assistant U.S. attorneys spoke on Talk 1300 AM radio.
They say they will continue to investigate any allegations of corruption within the New York State legislature.
"We have a big responsibility," U.S. attorney Andrew T. Baxter said on the radio, "but I don't want you to sell short our partners in local law enforcement. We have district attorneys who handle cases that we don't handle that keep the public safe. As I mentioned earlier, it is not easy for a local or state to tackle corruption cases sometimes."
Earlier this week, Bruno was found guilty on two of the eight charges against him.
Each carries a possible sentence of 20 years behind bars.
