NYS Police announce assault weapon registration re-certification process

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - The New York State Police announced on Friday that individuals who have previously registered an assault weapon under the SAFE Act can recertify their registration as required under state law.

They have created an online registration process to complete recertification. More information can be at https://troopers.ny.gov/Firearms/assault_weapons.php

There is no cost for recertification. Gun owners who do not wish to use the online process can download and print a form at the above link, or pick up a paper form from any NYS Police station.

State law requires that assault weapon registrations must be recertified every five years from the date the registration was filed. Failure to recertify will result in a revoked registration.

As part of the recertification process, those with a license must prove that they are not prohibited from possessing firearms under state and federal law, and must also provide specfic personal information.

Individuals who have questions about the process can call 1-855-LAWGUNS (1-855-529-4867).
