State of Emergency issued in Columbia County

COPAKE, N.Y. (NEWS10) - The Town of Copake is in a state of emergency due to high winds.

Yvonne Aceve had a feeling.

“I’m hearing that severe wind, and I’m thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, something is going to happen,’” she said.

Nasty weather hit the entire Copake area on Monday, but specifically, her home.

“Here you are trying to renovate your home, put up a new roof, and then Mother Nature does what she does best,” she said.

A tree was blown so hard it cracked open and landed on her roof. Her 17-year-old son, Paolo, noticed it first as he got off the school bus.

“I couldn’t believe what I saw; I was terrified,” he said. “I honestly thought that it had caved in.”

Though it was a scary moment, no one was hurt.

Up the road, wind gusts knocked a tractor trailer off State Route 22.

“From what we’re hearing, there was one wind gust that was up to 100 miles per hour,” Columbia County Sheriff David Bartlett said.

Bartlett said the driver had minor injuries and would be okay.

“One of the guys said he pretty much almost got blown over the guard rail,” he said.

Trees fell over on Lake Shore Drive as well. One landed on a propane tank, which chased a massive leak.

Crews were forced to empty it by using a control burn. Flames shot into the air but no one was injured.

Many remained without power Monday night but everybody recognized the day could have been worse.

“Eventually, there are better days ahead.”

“You can’t fight Mother Nature. You really can’t.”

Those without power can go to town hall to stay warm. The state of emergency remains in effect until Tuesday evening.
