Local Girl Scouts earn top awards

SCOTIA, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- - Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York honoring its 2018 recipients of the Gold and Silver awards at the Glen Sanders mansion over the weekend.

Thirteen local girls were recognized for completing the seven-step project that solves a community issue. It is the equivalent of the Boy Scouts "Eagle Scout" rank. Only about six percent of Girl Scouts earn this award nationally.

Caroline McGraw of Niskayuna was one of this year's Gold Award winners. She created the first municipal solar pollinator garden in New York State. The pollinator is designed to improve the appearance of solar fields and help increase the bee and butterfly population. After receiving the award McGraw said it shows "every girl can make a difference, no mater how big or how small." Caroline has successfully lobbied the amendment of NYS Senate bill 6339, which relates to creating a solar array pollinator benefit program.

As a bonus award, NEWS10 Chief Meteorologist Steve Caporizzo was presented with an honorary Gold Award for his work in the community.
