Lawsuit filed against local housing authority

GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) - Housing Authority employees in one local community claim they were assigned work at a personal home and corporation ran by the now-former executive director.

Those employees are now suing after they say they were harassed and fired for whistleblowing.

Plaintiffs, some who still work at the housing authority, have been barred from speaking out because of this lawsuit

It accuses the now-former executive director of requiring employees to do personal work for him while using authority resources.

Landscaping and awning repairs at a Gloversville home were allegedly the work of Gloversville housing authority employees.

The catch?

The home belonged to an authority board member at the time.

This kind of personal work, detailed in a federal lawsuit against the former executive director Timothy Mattice and former Tenant Relations Assistant Sheri McCloskey.

Employees claim Mattice assigned workers to this home on Walnut Street at least 40 times to fix plumbing & electrical switches, frame pictures, fix a dryer, and other housework that they should have been doing at properties actually owned by the authority.

Instead, the lawsuit claims taxpayer dollars and housing authority manpower had been routinely spent on a personal home and corporation ran by Mattice.

When employees spoke up, they claim Mattice and McCloskey retaliated by threatening them to keep quiet and suspending them without pay when they didn't.

Attorneys for all parties involved have not returned requests for comment.

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has opened an investigation into the authority's compliance with internal policies and procedures.
