Firefighter union president in support of red 'x' signs on vacant buildings

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - The president of the firefighters’ union spoke in support of the red “x” signs seen on vacant buildings.

Robert Mengel addressed the Albany Common Council at its meeting Monday. He said the red “x’s” indicate unsafe buildings that are a danger to firefighters and the public.

“The system works,” he said. “We haven’t had a firefighter injury in a vacant building in at least four years.”

The issue was introduced when some city officials proposed removing the signs because they feared the signs could fuel a cycle of economic downturn in some neighborhoods.
