Community bike program is a success

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - You see them all over the Capital Region, those bike racks, some with bikes and some without. It’s a first of its kind bike sharing program in our area.

They’re everywhere, from Albany to Saratoga Springs to the Collar City. The joint program with CDPHP and the CDTA, kicked off last July with 41 stations and only 160 bikes. This spring, the program moved out of its pilot phase.

“Over the last couple of weeks, we have expanded the number of stations we’ve basically doubled to eighty stations and now are populated those stations with new bikes.” CDTA CEO Carm Basile said.

Basile says nearly 350 new bikes and finding them is easy.

“If you want to know if a bike is available in a rack you use the CDPHP Cycle! App, you can get it from our website and it sort of gives you a real-time inventory of bikes where they are where they are moving to.”

Basile also says you can use the app to reserve a bike with the touch of the screen. Already they are seeing a usage rate of 80 percent with over 5,000 rides so far in the first few weeks.

Right now, the bikes are in the four major cities but they are looking to add more locations.

The focus, for now, is in the more populated areas where you have a better chance of success.
