Albany Medical Center nurses vote to become members of the New York State Nurses Association

ALBANY, N.Y.(NEWS10) - The New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) announced that the registered nurses at Albany Medical Center have voted to unionize.

The decision to join NYSNA was ratified early Saturday morning after two days of voting on Thursday and Friday.

The vote was monitored by the National Labor Relations Board.

The historic decision comes as nurses demand:
  • A voice in staffing decisions to guarantee enough nurses are on hand to give every patient the care they need and deserve.
  • A fair wage.
  • A fair benefit plan that will help recruit and retain the best of the best.
  • A fair retirement package.

Albany Medical Center President and CEO James Barba issued a statement after the vote:

“Albany Med is proud to employ the most highly qualified and talented team of nurses in the region, and grateful for the expert care they deliver to our patients every day.  We thank all of our nurses, regardless of how they voted, for their professionalism, for the passion they have for their work, and for the service they provide to our community and to our patients and their families.

“We pledge to continue delivering the highest quality of care in the region and maintaining an open dialogue with our nurses and all of our employees on how to best provide care in the ever-changing healthcare environment.”
