Worker crushed, killed by 26 ton fan at Rensselaer power plant

Web Staff - RENSSELAER, N.Y. (NEWS10) - Officials say a man has died after a freak accident involving a heavy fan at Empire Generation Co.

Authorities say at 8:30 a.m., the City of Rensselaer Police Department responded to a report of a work place accident at the Empire Generating Company located at 75 Riverside Ave. in Rensselaer.

Initial reports were that there was a male trapped under a large fan, which was located on the roof of one of the buildings. The man worked for 3-D Rigging, which is a sub-contracted company working at that facility.

Crews found the man still trapped in the fan. He was dead. His name is not being released at this time. He was in his late 40's early 50's.

Multiple fire departments with heavy apparatus responded to the scene.

The City of Albany Fire Department and City of Troy Fire Department assisted the Rensselaer City Fire Department with recovery efforts.
