Albany PD develops policy to deal with arrests in front of children

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - When Albany Police make an arrest, matters can become complicated if the suspect is a parent - especially if a child witnesses the arrest.

The Albany Police Department says they've put in place an official departmental policy for that situation and were asked to participate in a nationwide training video.

The video says when parents are arrested, children can pay the price. The anger and fear can negatively affect their emotional health.

"So we really need to provide the training that hey here are some things that you can do to alleviate the trauma that child is going through," said the Albany PD.

Albany Police used recommendations from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Osborne Association to develop their own formal policy.
