TROY -- There are new details in the shocking plot to kidnap, torture and kill former Rensselaer County District Attorney Trish DeAngelis has come to light, including the name of the man at the center of case.

NEWS10 was the first to report Wednesday night that an inmate who DeAngelis had once prosecuted concocted the plot.

Sources now say that inmate is 30-year-old Chad Rubin, a self-admitted heroin addict and convicted arsonist, who was sent to prison around five years ago on charges of bank robbery.

New York State Police confirm that they are investigating the elaborate plan, which included rape and a tractor trailer, where DeAngelis would have supposedly been kept and tortured for up to one year before she would be killed.

Sources say Rubin also enlisted the help of a former, fellow prisoner. Once on the outside, the hired hand would be responsible for buying supplies, such as rope, tape and even sex toys to help the men follow through with the horrendous crime.

The plan quickly unraveled when the hired prisoner went to police, which helped authorities get the hard evidence they needed on Rubin -- who was said to have originally been set for release in November 2010.

According to sources, Rubin was supposed to be formally charged at the Rensselaer County Courthouse Thursday, but that was cancelled for unknown reasons.

NEWS10 is told that DeAnglis was made aware of the plan just before leaving her office two years ago.

Rubin remains behind bars in Dutchess County.
