SWEENEY FOR CONGRESS
For Immediate Release
Clifton Park, NY - Congressman John Sweeney and his wife Gayle issued the following statements Wednesday.
Gayle Sweeney's statement:
This is a difficult moment for me.
I am a private person married to a public official. As such, my private life has been dragged into this campaign. I do not relish having to make a public statement. But I want to clear up what is a completely false accusation against my husband. I have shunned the media and the public spotlight because of the intrusive nature it plays in my private life and that of my husband and family.
I love my husband and he loves me.
My husband's opponent has a hired gun that feels the need to embarrass me and slander my marriage. Because of that I must respond to the unfair and unwarranted attack on my personal life. The evening in question was a very difficult time for our family. Real life has real problems. Like every family we have personal challenges that we must overcome.
Anyone who believes that life is not complicated just doesn't get it. The pressure of the year long public scrutiny reached it's breaking point and so had I. I did not need to be protected from John.
At no time has John hurt me or done anything other than try and protect me.
There were never any injuries to me. Neither John nor I are perfect. But we love each other deeply. The incident report that has been given to the press is untrue. The real incident report has nothing in it like the salacious words in this concocted document. I don't know if it is possible, but I give my permission for the State Police to release the real report for all to see. Thank you.
Rep. John Sweeney's statement:
Thank you for all being here. I am going to make a brief statement as my wife did. The period in question was a stressful period for our family. In retrospect, as I look back, the symptoms that put me into the hospital weeks later I was experiencing at that time.
The report is false and I have trust in the integrity of the state police. There was no domestic violence and like my wife I call on the state police to release the true report.
My opponent has no shame. She has shown that throughout this campaign. and in her desire for power she has tried to ruin my marriage and slander my family.
I do this job to represent the people of the 20th Congressional District. I am proud of the eight year record I have. I have worked hard for it. My opponent is doing this strictly for personal gain. The tone and tenor of this campaign has reached a level beneath anything I have ever seen in my years in public service. I love my wife, I love my children and I love my family. I will not allow them to be dragged into the middle of this just because my opponent has a thirst and desire for power.
You know, I have been very open in the last year with you all especially about my family, whether it was my son and my most recent health problems, more so than I needed to be. I will say today that this is the last time that I am ever going to talk about my family in the context of politics.
