Pet Connection Poem - 1995

                                 Christmas 1995

                                     A GIFT

                       You were my dream, you were my love,
                        God smiled on us from a cloud above.
                     I was always so happy just to be next to you,
                      As the days went by, farther apart we grew.

                      What did we do wrong, I'll just never know.
                         You got tired of me and let me go.
                       You were my friend, I gave you my best.
                        As I grew older, you called me a pest.

                   Now you've sent me away to a place I don't know
                     I'm trapped in this cage with nowhere to go.
                      I pace back and forth and hope to be free,
                       I think of the past, the way it used to be.

                       I am not alone, there are others like me,
                Though our futures grow darker and we may never see.
                        I cry so hard but know one does hear,
                       This is not my home, it is a place I fear.

                    My heart has been broken, I pray for tomorrow.
                      I hope for happiness to relieve my sorrow.
                   There are so many like me, our dreams fell apart.
                   Our lives are now empty as we search for a start.

                      As you look to my eyes you'll see my fear,
                        The longer I stay, my end grows near.
                      I know that it's Christmas, a time to rejoice.
                     I'll cry so loud, will you please hear my voice.

                      This is a time to be thankful, a time to give
                      A time to think of others and help me live.
                     I won't ask for much, just a touch of your hand.
                      I'll be loyal to you, by your side I will stand.

                  When I look up to you, I'll see you smile from above,
                 I have only one thing to give you, it's a GIFT of my love.
