Max Melitzer
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (WTEN) -It is a real life rags to riches story for a homeless man in Utah, and the money can be tracked all the way back to the Capital Region.
Rich Goldfarb, of Saratoga Springs, has been on the hunt for his homeless cousin, Max Melitzer, in Utah to let him know that he is set to inherit over $100,000 from his deceased brother, Morris Melitzer.
It all started when Morris Melitzer, of Schenectady, passed away from prostate cancer in April 2010 and Goldfarb was designated the executor of his will.
For more than a year, Goldfarb attempted to find his cousin Max, calling police departments and missions in Utah where he thought Max may be. But, no luck.
Goldfarb then resorted to hiring a private detective, David Lundberg, to find Max. Sure enough, two months later Lundberg found him in a Salt Lake City park using a mug shot taken of Max about a year ago over a jaywalking charge that he failed to appear on.
Max has been homeless for almost three decades, living on the streets and pushing around a shopping cart with all of his belongings.
With no identification, Max could not take a flight to New York, so Goldfarb says he solved things by getting him a bus ticket.
Max is on his way, and is expected to arrive this Thursday. News10 will follow-up with this story then.
