Man kills himself while in standoff with Colonie Police

COLONIE, N.Y. - A man killed himself inside his Rapple Drive home in Colonie following a stand-off by police attempting to convince him not to harm himself.

Colonie Police responded to 32 Rapple Drive, Albany, around 8:50 p.m. Monday where 53-year-old James Shepard was despondent and attempting to harm himself by overdosing on prescription medication. When police arrived, they also observed Shepard in the home holding a shotgun.

Police attempted to contact Shepared inside but were unsuccessful. A short time after they got there, they heard a single gunshot from inside the home.

Further efforts to contact the subject were also unsuccessful and the Special Services Team entered the home to find Shepard deceased from the single gunshot.

The residents of Rapple Drive were notified to stay in their homes during the standoff. The Colonie Police Department Special Services Team helped to resolve the incident.

Shepard was taken by Albany County Coroner to Albany Medical Center and an autopsy will be performed Tuesday.
