New penalty for talking on a cell phone while driving

Posted:

NEW YORK - The state of New York has enacted a new law Wednesday for people caught talking or texting on their cell phone while behind the wheel.

For the past 10 years, the law gives a $100 fine to the driver caught talking on their cell phone without a hands-free device while driving. But the Department of Motor Vehicles announced as of Wednesday, drivers will get two points on their license, in addition to the $100 fine.

The New York State law is drivers who accumulate 11 points on their license within 18 months are eligible for losing their license. Also, more points can lead to higher insurance costs.

According to the DMV, driver distraction contributes to at least one in five car crashes state wide.
