SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- An old building on the General Electric campus in Schenectady has opened its doors after a $45 million transformation.
The new global headquarters of GE's renewable energy is now open at the Schenectady campus, bringing more than 600 jobs with it.
It's a state of the art "green" building that monitors more than 6,000 wind turbines all across North America.
More than 650 jobs have been created in less than 2 years -- and local leaders say this is huge victory from a company that once pulled jobs out of the area.
Susan Savage, chair of the Schenectady County Legislature, says, "Today they've taken another look at us, they're reinvesting in this community. And what that's going to mean is a very bright future for a whole other generation."
Lieutenant Governor Richard Ravitch added, "It's about time we focused on what really can bring economic strength and employment to this state."
The State pitched in $5 million for the headquarters, while Schenectady County put in about $3 million more.
